There is no doubt that the Chinese culture has influenced not only the development of the eastern part of the world, but also the European countries. Chinese culture is considered one of the oldest world cultures; the inventions made by the Chinese in ancient times have influenced the way science was developing in the European countries. The thing is that there are so many inventions that sometimes it is difficult to distinguish what was invented in china and what was borrowed by the European culture. This paper is aimed to outline the most significant inventions of the Chinese culture and to outline four of them that have influenced the development of the world’s culture.
As it was mentioned above, the Chinese culture was rich and unique before the European or American. The most influential and significant inventions were:
- inline farming
- compass
- seeder
- iron plow
- deep drilling
- rudder
- harness for horses
- china
- toilet paper
- printing with movable type.
Obviously, it is not the full list of invention. To this list one may include fireworks as well, because they have become an inseparable part of every holiday in every country of the world. On the other hand, such invention as a firework is an entertaining one; it is not of great value. The inventions listed above are those that influenced the development of the world’s culture and, besides, those inventions were useful. China is the agricultural country that is why there is no wonder that almost all of the inventions were used in agriculture. One more peculiarity is that all the inventions were made in the B.C. times, which means that Chinese culture was rather rich and independent from the other world.
It is difficult to distinguish four main inventions, because all of the inventions listed above are significant either in modern culture or they were significant for people of those times. However, the most important inventions are: printing with movable type; compass; toilet paper; and seeder.
The first printed book was created approximately in 868. Through 100 years of master Bi Sheng (990-1051, pictured above), using burnt clay removable letters, invented the technology of removable letters and developed the basic niceties of typography with their use. Technology was constantly improved, which took almost 300 years. To compare - the Gutenberg Bible, considered Europe's first printed book with removable letters, was made in the mid-15th century. It is noteworthy that the Chinese do not use metal letters to the end of the 15th century.
The Chinese have used the first compasses to indicate the direction of the mineral magnetite in at least the 4th century BC. These devices were designed to predict the location and directions. In the 4th century BC known in China shaman wrote that magnetite iron causes an attraction, calling it. Compass consisted of magnetite spoons and bronze plate. First marine compasses with magnetized needles were made in fifteen hundred years, in 1040, and became widespread only in the mid-12th century. The phenomenon of residual magnetization, which allowed these compasses work, it was re-'invented' in another 500 years, in 1600, William Gilbert
It is known that paper was invented in China, and its first application for hygienic purposes dates back to the Sui Dynasty in 589. In 851, the Arab traveler with amazement wrote that the Chinese use paper instead of water to clean the body. In the early 14th century, they produces about 700,000 sheets in packs 1000 to 10000 pieces every year. To comparison - in colonial America in the early 18th century for the necessities of hygiene people universally used maize leaves. Commercial toilet paper did not appear until the mid-19th century, one of the manufacturers specified that it was "almost without chips”.
Mechanical seed drill was used to plant the seeds at the same depth and uniform coverage of the earth. When sown by hand plants grow densely and randomly, resulting in lower yields. Chinese farmers used a mechanical device already in the second century BC. The first documented case of the use of mechanical drills in Europe was recorded in 1566, which was confirmed by a patent in the name of Camillo Torello. Widespread mechanical seed drills appeared only in the mid-nineteenth century.
All the inventions mentioned above show that the Chinese culture was far ahead from the European culture. I would like to outline two inventions from those four. In my opinion, the most important invention for the whole world was the invention of compass because it gave people the opportunity to travel and to explore the world around them. Not only sailors were using compass, but also those who traveled by foot. The point is that compass became one of the factors that helped people to develop their selves and to learn something new. In my opinion, without compass the humankind would not reach the level of the development as it is nowadays.
Personally for me, the most important invention was the invention of toilet paper. Toilet paper is used by everyone and nobody think how it was invented and what could have happened if it had not been invented. This invention has become an important part of human hygiene and it is unimaginable how we could live without it. The Chinese have understood rather early the importance of hygiene, unlike the Europeans who were not used to wash themselves. Every day people from all over the world use toilet paper without thinking about its origin.
